"Deep in the Heart of Texans", might be a good name for a song about St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital of Houston, Texas. St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital is arguably the best hospital for cardiac care in the "Lone Star State". Through its Texas Heart Institute, the hospital has such a good reputation that people from all over the world come there to take advantage of the cardiac care services. For 14 straight years, the cardiac care unit has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report, as one of the nation's best. (The 2004 rankings have the unit ranked #9 in the nation).

But St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital is about more than just cardiac care. The hospital offers 23 clinical services covering 40 specialties. In the year 2001, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital had 32,800 inpatient visits, and 220,000 outpatient and ER visits.

AARP, it its magazine Modern Maturity, recently listed "The Top 50 Hospitals in America". (The rankings were done by Consumer's Checkbook, a watchdog group). St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital was ranked the 46th best hospital in the nation. The rankings are based on these criteria: medical mortality rates, surgical mortality rates, physician ratings, accreditation scores (score given by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations).

St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital is affiliated with both the Baylor School of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical Schools- Houston. 60% of the physicians at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital have teaching appointments at one of these two schools.

St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital has a fine staff of doctors, but it also has an award winning staff of nurses. In 2001, St. Luke's received the much coveted, Magnet Award. The award is given by the American Nurses Association, as a way to honor hospitals for their excellence in patient care. St. Luke's Episcopal is the first Magnet Hospital in the state of Texas.

So, this is a great hospital, with a great staff. But, the staff is not complete. As of press time, there are numerous openings on the nursing staff at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. If you think you've got what it takes to be a nurse at a Magnet Hospital, I'm sure that they would love to hear from you.
