St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center has been providing medical care for the citizens of "The Valley of the Sun", for well over 100 years now. St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center (which was founded by the Sisters of Mercy) opened back in 1895. Today, this great hospital is a 570-bed not-for-profit hospital that provides regional acute care to the people of Phoenix and the surrounding region. (With its national reputation, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center attracts patients from all over the Southwestern United States).

In 2003, Solucient ranked St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center as one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation (The Benchmarks for Success Study). The findings were published in Modern Healthcare magazine. Four areas are judged when determining which hospitals make that list. Those areas are: quality of care, adaptation to environment, financial performance, and operational performance. Note: St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center was in the category for major teaching hospitals.

Also, U.S. News and World Report, recently named St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center to its list of the top neurology and neurosurgery hospitals in the country. The rankings were published in that magazine's 2004 issue titled "America's Best Hospitals". St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center was ranked as the 9th best hospital in the country for neurology and neurosurgery services.

Among the services offered at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center are: cardiology, cancer care, children's services, women's services, Barrow Neurological Institute, surgical services, endoscopy, diabetes education, audiology center, blood bank, MRI, hyperbaric medicine, orthopedics, pulmonary rehabilitation, tuberculosis clinic, pediatrics, stone treatment center, speech/language pathology. Also, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is home to a Level I Trauma Center (the only one in the state of Arizona).

Currently, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center has a medical staff of 1480, and a nursing staff of almost 700.
