The study was done by the Solucient Institute of Evanston, Illinois, and sets benchmarks for hospitals to achieve the most cost-efficient and highest quality of medical care. The rankings are based on eight different criteria, which measure clinical quality practices, operations, and financial management. Those criteria are: risk-adjusted mortality index; risk-adjusted complications index; severity adjusted average length of stay; cash flow margin (profitability); proportion of outpatient revenue; productivity; quality of hospital's data; expense per adjusted discharge.
