Nurses for Newborns Recognized

Nursing Jobs By State

The federal government has recognized the Nurses for Newborns Foundation's "Bridge to the Future" program for its efforts in improving the health and care of special needs babies.

The program, designed to ensure a smoother transition from the hospital to long-term home life, has nurses visiting the homes of poor families with infants recently discharged from neonatal intensive care units.

During these visits, the nurses train the parents intensively on how to care for infants with special needs or very low birth weights. The nurses also look for potential problems in the house and instruct families on how to correct these problems.

Families participating in the program are less likely to have infants experience inappropriate emergency department visits, re-admissions, child abuse or placement with a foster home. The families are also more likely to have better access to medical resources and up to date immunizations.

The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Healthcare Innovations Exchange recognized the efforts of the "Bridge to the Future" program. The Agency is designed to accelerate development and increase adaptation of innovations in the healthcare industry.

In a statement, Sharon Rohrbach, CEO and foundation founder, said, "We sincerely hope to replicate this program nationally for the purpose of preventing infant mortality, child abuse and neglect among our nation's most vulnerable infants."

St. Louis based Nurses for Newborns was founded in 1991 and is designed as a home visiting agency.
