Dr. Nils Johanson had the dream of creating a nonprofit hospital in the port town of Seattle. His dream became a reality when the Swedish Medical Center was established in 1910. During the following years, the hospital started to make improvements in order to answer to the medical needs of a growing community. By the purchase of facilities, equipments, and with the most professional and compassionate staff, the Swedish has became one of the largest and most complete medical centers of the nation.
An example of this is the Providence Campus that was founded by the Sisters of Providence in Seattle in 1887; it became part of the Swedish Medical Center in 2000. Since that date, both facilities have become widely respected institutions in heart program and nationally recognized by its Advance Bloodless Program. Providence Campus also has an emergency room that records more than 24,000 patient visits annually, a voluntary inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults, a general surgery program, and a specialized program for patients suffering severe neurological disorders.
