St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco

Nursing Jobs By State

St. Mary's Medical Center is a short term hospital located in San Francisco, California. St. Mary's has 403 licensed beds and more than 500 physicians on staff. Backed by its premium medical technology, this teaching hospital makes a name for itself for quality, personalized care, patient satisfaction and excellent clinical outcomes. St. Mary's Medical Center is fully accredited by the Joint Committee on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and participates with the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The Medical Center, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and part of Catholic Healthcare West, has cared for the people of the San Francisco Bay Area since 1857. Today, it is one of the largest not-for-profit, community-based health care providers in Northern California.

St. Mary's Medical Center's history began in 1831, when the Sisters of Mercy at the Convent of Mercy was established in Dublin, Ireland. In 1854, Reverend Hugh Gallagher solicited the Sisters of Mercy for service in San Francisco at the request of that city's first Archbishop. In 1855, the Sisters of Mercy served in the State Hospital fighting an Asiatic Cholera epidemic. They were asked to run San Francisco County Hospital and later they purchased the old Stockton Street State Hospital and officially open San Francisco's first County Hospital. Because the City refrained for reimbursing, The Sisters of Mercy withdrew from that hospital and founded St. Mary's Hospital. After changing locations, the hospital started to expand and update adding new programs and services to better respond to the needs of the communities it serves.

St. Mary's Medical Center features a comprehensive array of healthcare services and programs including: Acute Physical Rehabilitation, Adolescent Psychiatric Services, Bariatrics Surgery, Chaplaincy Services, Diabetes Services Program, Eye Center, Gastroenterology/Endoscopy Suites, HIV Services, Inpatient Dialysis Services, Intensive Care Unit, Medical Education, Nuclear Medicine Department, Ophthalmology, Outpatient Physical Therapy, Palliative Care, Pharmacy, Respiratory/Pulmonary Department, Skilled Nursing Facility, Spine Center, Sr. Mary Philippa Health Center, USF Student Health Clinic and Volunteer Opportunities.
