Maimonides Medical Center was founded in 1911 as the New Utrecht Infirmary. In 1947, it merged with Beth Moses and Israel Zion hospitals to form Maimonides Medical Center, a vital and thriving non-profit, non-sectarian hospital. This hospital is an unsurpassed treatment facility and academic medical center in the Borough of Brooklyn; in fact, Maimonides Medical Center is among the best in the country. Maimonides Medical Center provides community services and high quality compassionate patient care to the diverse population of Brooklyn. The Medical Center has more than 70 primary care and sub-specialty programs, a staff of internationally renowned physicians and 705 beds.
In 2004, the Medical Center served more than 241,000 ambulatory care visits, 91,000 emergency room visits, and delivered more than 6,300 babies. Maimonides Medical Center is a leading academic medical center; each year, it trains more than 400 residents and medical students, contributing to the progress of medicine through its broad base of clinical and laboratory research. Maimonides is affiliated with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
The physicians of Maimonides Medical Center are pioneers of new medical and surgical treatments, among them the first needle aspiration biopsies, the first intra-aortic balloon pump, the first commercial pacemaker development and the first human heart transplant operation in the United States.
