Buffalo General Hospital is a 511-bed acute care medical center located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in downtown Buffalo. A major affiliate of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Buffalo General offers medical treatment in a wide spectrum of clinical inpatient departments and outpatient programs. Buffalo General Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO). Buffalo General Hospital, a part of Kaleida Health, is the largest hospital in upstate New York, providing nearly 25% of adult medical and surgical services in Erie County. Specialized programs include cardiac and orthopedic surgery, lithotripsy and urology, psychiatry, dialysis, gastroenterology, cardiac rehabilitation, and rehabilitation medicine.

After a meeting at the Buffalo Medical Association featuring Dr. Phineas Strong and Charles Clarke with the idea of forming a proper hospital, it was resolved the creation of the Buffalo General Hospital. During three years funds were raised in order to be able to open Buffalo General Hospital. The original building on rural High St., containing 4 wards with a total capacity of 100 beds and it was the first, and for nearly a quarter century, the only teaching affiliate of what is known as the University at Buffalo's School of Medicine and Bio-medical Sciences. Throughout its history, Buffalo General Hospital grew to address the health care needs of the community and has been known region-wide for its patient care, clinical education and research programs.

Buffalo General Hospital offers an ample range of healthcare services among which can be found: addiction services, adult outpatient behavioral health clinic, allergy and immunology clinic, ambulatory services, ambulatory surgery, Amherst general endoscopy, asthma clinic, cardiac medical intensive care unit (CMICU), center for wound care and hyperbaric medicine, dialysis treatments and emergency department. It also offers a variety of programs and services to the public before they become patients.
