Metropolitan State Hospital serves patients from Southern California and neighboring counties. This hospital is located in Los Angeles County in the city of Norwalk. This facility provides access to the families of the patients and to other health facilities. The current population of Metropolitan State Hospital is of 900 people. This hospital offers a continuum of care that includes a range of psychiatric treatment, a Skilled Nursing Facility, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Intermediate / Subacute care and acute care. These programs were developed to respond to all the inpatient treatment needs of the counties.
Since the early 1900's, the hospital has served as an integral part of the California Mental Health System. In 1914 and 1915, the history of Metropolitan State Hospital began when a legislature authorized the purchase of the land where the hospital was going to be built. The Administrative Services of Metropolitan State Hospital are under the direction of the Hospital Administrator, these departments of service include a Clinical Laboratory, Housekeeping, Communications, Human Resources, Dietary Services, Mailroom, Fashion Center, Pharmacy Services, Fire Prevention, Plant Operations, Hospital Police, Warehouse, Health Information Management, Trust Office, Health & Safety, Printing/Duplicating and Fiscal Services.
