The beginnings of the Baptist Health System in 1903 when a group of more than 30 physicians who were members of the Bexar County Medical Society along with 30 business and other professional men organized the San Antonio Associated Charities and built a hospital on Dallas street. That was the Physicians and Surgeons Hospital. Nowadays the Baptist Health System is recognized as a leader in the health care services in south and San Antonio, TX.
The Baptist Medical Center is owned by the Vanguard Health Systems and is also affiliated to the Baptist General Convention of Texas (which is the 4th biggest employer in San Antonio) as well as completely accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The Baptist Health System is conformed by five acute care hospitals which has 1,558 licensed beds available for their patients. Those hospitals are: the Baptist Medical Center, North Central Baptist Hospital, Southeast Baptist Hospital, Northeast Baptist Hospital and the St. Luke's Baptist Hospital.
