Mad River Community Hospital

Hiring Travel Nurses

Located in Arcata, California (a small town in Humboldt County on California's North Coast) Mad River Community Hospital is a 78-bed, acute care medical facility. It all started with the original Trinity Hospital built in 1911 that had 25 beds, a nursery and two sun rooms and an operating room on the top floor. The hospital was then sold to Dr. Purlenky, and in 1925, the Arcata Chamber of Commerce raised funds and purchased the hospital. A tragic fire destroyed the hospital in 1927 while the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange ran the facility. With extensive community support and donations, the Trinity Hospital was rebuilt in 1944 and operations were resumed by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The hospital closed in 1969 due to the lack of state and federal funds for modernization or expansion. Seeking help from American Hospital Management Corporation (AHMC) the members of the Trinity Hospital Medical Staff started plans for the construction of a new hospital. In 1972, without the assistance of state or federal funds, Mad River Hospital opened its doors with patients from Trinity Hospital transferred to the new facility.
