University of Michigan Health System was recently recognized as being our nation's 11th best hospital. University of Michigan Health System consists of: University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, and Women's Hospital.

University Hospital is a 550-bed, 11-story hospital that opened in 1986. 70% of the patients at University Hospital are from communities or regional hospitals outside the Ann Arbor area.

C.S. Mott Children's Hospital opened in 1969, and has 200 beds. The Women's Hospital opened in 1950 and features a 28-room, 32 maternity-bed Birth Center.

The recognition of being the 11th best hospital in America came from U.S. News and World Report. In that magazine's 2004 edition on "America's Best Hospitals", University of Michigan Health System garnered the aforementioned rating. Also, departments within the University of Michigan Health System were nationally ranked. Those departments and their national rankings are: cancer- 7th best in the nation; digestive disorders- 13th best; ear, nose, and throat- 5th best; geriatrics- 8th best; gynecology- 16th best; heart and heart surgery- 19th best; hormonal disorders- 13th best; kidney disease- 15th best; neurology and neurosurgery- 16th best; orthopedics- 23rd best; ophthalmology- 15th best; psychiatry- 21st best; rehabilitation- 12th best; rheumatology- 13th best; urology- 14th best; respiratory disorders- 10th best.

Many medical "firsts" have happened within the University of Michigan Health System. For example: 1) in 1912, University of Michigan Health System established the nation's very first Department of Dermatology; 2) in 1987, the first brain tissue graft was performed; 3) the gastroscope was developed at the University of Michigan Health System; 4) Dr. Stefan Fajans determined that there are two different types of diabetes millitus; 5) University of Michigan Health System was part of a multi-center team that discovered the location of the first gene responsible for man's predisposition to prostate cancer; 6) University of Michigan Health System researchers developed the first EKG machine in 1913; and many others.
