U.S. News and World Report recently ranked University of Chicago Hospitals as one of the best hospitals in the nation. University of Chicago Hospitals consist of: Bernard A Mitchell Hospital (built in 1983, an adult patient facility); The University of Chicago Children's Hospital (built in 1967, has 154 beds); The Duchossis Center for Advanced Medicine; Chicago Lying-In Hospital (a maternity hospital with 47 Level III NICU beds).

Overall, University of Chicago Hospitals has 605 beds. In the year ending 2002, University of Chicago Hospitals delivered 3100 babies, had over 71,000 emergency room visits, and had over 24,000 hospital admissions.

University of Chicago Hospitals employ over 5,000 people. Also, there are 600 attending physicians on staff, as well as over 1,000 nurses.

As mentioned earlier, U.S. News and World Report had high praise for University of Chicago Hospitals in their 2004 issue, titled "America's Best Hospitals". Besides being highly ranked overall, eleven different departments at University of Chicago Hospitals were singled out as being among the nation's best. Those departments and their national rankings: cancer- 14th best in the nation; geriatrics- 19th best; orthopedics- 29th best; rheumatology- 20th best; respiratory disorders- 22nd best; kidney disease- 23rd best; digestive disorders- 7th best; gynecology- 25th best; hormonal disorders- 17th best; neurology and neurosurgery- 23rd best; pediatrics- 26th best.
