University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Arizona is a 365-bed non-profit hospital that provides acute care for patients from all over the Southwest. Affiliated with both the University of Arizona College of Medicine and the University of Arizona College of Nursing, University of Arizona Health Sciences Center is the home of these Centers of Excellence: Arizona Arthritis Center, Arizona Cancer Center, Arizona Center on Aging, Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center, Arizona Respiratory Center, Steele Memorial Children's Research Center, The University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center.

U.S. News and World Report, in its 2004 issue that listed "America's Best Hospitals", ranked nine different specialties offered by UAHSC as being among the best in the nation. Those specialties and their 2004 national rankings are: cancer care- 20th best in the country; heart and heart surgery- 22nd best; geriatrics- 31st best; gynecology- 48th best; ear, nose and throat- 34th best; respiratory disorders- 26th best.

Numerous medical "firsts" have occurred at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. They include: the design of the world's first artificial wrist (1976); the use of radiology without film (1977); Arizona's first heart transplant (1979); surgery professors help discover earliest known case of AIDS in the United States (1987); pediatric researchers discover technique for faster diagnosis of measles (1991); the first use of the stereotactic radiosurgery on a tumor of the spine (1993).

Also, University of Arizona Health Sciences Center has achieved Magnet Hospital status. The Magnet Award is given by the American Nursing Association to hospitals for excellence in nursing. Only 100 U.S. hospitals have achieved Magnet Hospital status. (University of Arizona Health Sciences Center is the only Arizona hospital to be awarded the Magnet Award.) The over 1,000 RNs who are on staff at University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, can take pride in helping UAHSC achieve this vaunted status.
