Established in 1945, as a teaching hospital, UAB Hospital is today one of our nation's finest hospitals. UAB Hospital is located on the campus of University of Alabama- Birmingham (UAB). The 900-bed hospital provides tertiary care, and treats, on average 35,000 patients annually.

In the book, "The Best In Medicine", UAB Hospital is listed as one of the top 3 hospitals in the nation. Also, 74 UAB doctors are listed in the 2nd edition of  "The Best Doctors" of America.

U.S. News and World Report certainly recognizes the greatness of this Alabama hospital. For, fourteen different UAB Hospital specialties were listed in that magazine's 2004 "America's Best Hospitals" issue. Those fourteen specialties and their rankings (nationally) were: cancer- 19th best in the nation; rheumatology- 6th best in the nation (that represents the 13th year in a row that this department has made the magazine's list); heart and heart surgery- 13th best in the nation (for 9 straight years that department has made the list); gynecology- 17th best in the nation (has made the list for 6 straight years now); hormonal disorders- 41st best in the nation; respiratory disorders- 28th best in the nation; ear, nose, and throat- 29th best in the nation; kidney disease- 13th best in the nation; rehabilitation program- 23rd best in the nation; orthopedics- 34th best in the nation; geriatrics- 29th best in the nation; digestive disorders- 50th best in the nation; neurology and neurosurgery- 32nd best in the nation; and urology- 32nd best in the nation.

Also, UAB Hospital has recently been recognized by National Research Corporation as a recipient of that organization's Consumer Choice Award. Those awards are based on surveys of consumers, and UAB Hospital was ranked the best hospital in Birmingham.

But, as you can tell, UAB Hospital is much more than just the best hospital in Birmingham. It's one of the best anywhere.
