Founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington is today one of the finest hospitals in the Pacific Northwest. The study done by the Solucient Institute of Evanston, Illinois sets benchmarks for hospitals to achieve the most cost-efficient and highest quality of medical care. The rankings are based on eight different criteria which measure clinical quality practices, operations, and financial management. Those criteria are: risk-adjusted morality index, risk-adjusted complications index, severity-adjusted average length of stay, cash flow margin (profitability), proportion of outpatient revenue, productivity, quality of hospital's data, expense per adjusted discharge.
