Shands Hospital at the University of Florida is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Florida College of Medicine. U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks Shands Hospital at the University of Florida as one of our nation's finest hospitals. In that magazine's 2004 issue on "America's Best Hospitals", Shands Hospital at the University of Florida had twelve different departments which earned recognition. Those departments and their national rankings: Cancer- 34th best in the nation; Heart and Heart Surgery- 41st best; Kidney Disease- 28th best; Urology- 22nd best; Orthopedics- 48th best; Neurology and Neurosciences- 44th best; Ear, Nose, and Throat- 25th best; Digestive Disorders- 22nd best; Geriatrics- 25th best; Gynecology- 32nd best; Respiratory Diseases- 37th best; Pediatrics- 28th best.

Shands Hospital at the University of Florida was founded in 1958. It is the only hospital in the state of Florida that serves patients from every county in Florida.

Numerous "firsts" have occurred at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Those "firsts" include: Florida's first open-heart surgery performed in 1959; Florida's first total hip replacement surgery (1970); Florida's first Burn Intensive Care Center (1978); Florida's first adult liver transplant (1986); Florida's first adult lung transplant (1994); United States' first embryonic tissue transplant for spinal cord repair (1997); and many others.

At press time, there were openings on the nursing staff at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. This hospital has been at the forefront of medical research and innovation for many years.
