Northwestern Memorial Hospital of Chicago is considered to be one of our country's top academic medical centers. This 720-bed primary care facility was recently ranked 5th in a survey of The Top 50 Hospitals in America. The survey was done by the folks at the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The survey judged hospitals using various criteria such as: medical mortality rate; surgery mortality rate; physician ratings (where doctors rate a particular hospital); and accreditation score given by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital was established when two of Chicago's leading hospitals decided to consolidate. Those two hospitals, Passavant Memorial Hospital and Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital consolidated in 1972, bringing together two of Chicago's oldest and most distinguished medical institutions.
Today, Northwestern Memorial Hospital is recognized locally, regionally, and nationally as one of our nation's best hospitals. Locally, consumers in Chicagoland ranked Northwestern Memorial the area's top hospital in areas of: Best Quality, Best Physicians, Best Nurses, Most Personalized Care, Best Image and Reputation.
Nationally, U.S. News and World Report rated eight of Northwestern Memorial's clinical specialties as being among the nations' best. (U.S. News and World Report, July 2004 rankings). Those specialties and their national rankings are: Heart and Heart Surgery- 43rd best nationally; Hormonal Disorders- 16th best; Digestive Disorders- 27th best; Orthopedics- 21st best; Gynecology- 26th best; Ear, Nose, and Throat- 33rd best; Urology- 17th best; Rheumatology- 21st best.
Finally, there are numerous nursing positions, which are currently open at Northwestern Memorial (at press time). This great hospital is one of our nation's finest, and also is a great place to work. Since 2000, Northwestern Memorial Hospital has been named ranked one of "The Best Companies for Working Mothers", in a survey done by the people at Working Mother magazine.
