Founded in 1884, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is generally recognized as one of our nation's top hospitals. In a recent survey of AMERICA'S TOP 50 HOSPITALS, Memorial Sloan-Kettering was ranked 8th overall. The survey was done by the folks at the AARP, and was featured in that organization's Modern Maturity magazine. The rankings were based on these criteria: physician ratings (how doctors rated a particular hospital); surgical mortality rate; medical mortality rate; and accreditation score (score given by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations).

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is a 427-bed facility located at 1275 York Avenue, on Manhattan's Upper East Side (between 67th and 68th Streets). Over 7900 employees work at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, and of those 7900, almost 1200 are registered nurses. Last year, over 18,800 patients were admitted to this outstanding hospital. Also, there were almost 375,000 outpatient visits and 38,000 screening visits to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2002-2003.

In the 2004 U.S. News and World Report edition on "America's Best Hospitals", several Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center departments received national rankings. Those departments and their national rankings: Cancer- 2nd best in the nation; Digestive Disorders- 47th best; Ear, Nose, and Throat- 23rd best; Gynecology- 12th best; Neurology and Neurosurgery- 42nd best; Urology- 9th best.
