The rankings were compiled by Consumer's Checkbook, and are based on these four criteria: medical mortality rates, surgical mortality rates, accreditation scores (given by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations), and physician ratings (ratings given by doctors to a particular hospital).

Also, for 13 years in a row, U.S. News and World Report has recognized Georgetown University Hospital as one of our nation's finest. In their 2004 issue featuring the cover story, "America's Best Hospitals", two different departments within Georgetown University Hospital garnered national recognition.
