In 1960, Memorial Hospital and the Sloan-Kettering Institute joined forces to become Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; in fact, the tradition of care of this medical center began more than 100 years ago when the New York Cancer Hospital became Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases. Throughout the years, the close collaboration between scientists and physicians has given a unique strength to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
More than 750 men and women of all ages and places serve as volunteers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Each day, retired people, homemakers, truck drivers, teachers, bankers and beauticians (just to mention a few), volunteer at this medical center because they have one thing in common: a capacity to give and a commitment to the mission of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, which is: to provide the best cancer care anywhere. The volunteer program of this medical center is service-oriented; the volunteers work along the employees in more than 75 departments, providing around 60,000 hours of service per year. As you can realize, the volunteers of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center are an integral part of the staff.
