St. Joseph's Medical Center is a not-for-profit, regional hospital serving the community of Stockton, California and the neighboring areas. St. Joseph?s Medical Center is certified for 294 beds. The hospital counts with a physician staff of over 400 and more than 2,400 employees. It is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) and participates with the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Specializing in cardiovascular care, comprehensive cancer services, and women and children's services including neonatal intensive care, St. Joseph's is the largest hospital as well as the largest private employer in Stockton. After hearing the plans of Father William B. O?Connor of building a home for men to spend their last years in comfort and being cared for, Dr. Ellis Harbert and a group of local physicians suggested the construction of a hospital as well. They pointed out the great need of the community for a suitable place to which they could bring their medical and surgical patients for specialized care and the doctors of Stockton pledged their support. Father O?Connor purchased some land north of the city with donated money. St. Joseph?s opened in December, 1899, under the supervision of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. As the community of Stockton and the surrounding towns increased, St. Joseph?s developed and expanded to better provide answers to the healthcare needs of the population.
