St. Luke's Hospital is a not-for-profit, non-denominational hospital located just east of Interstate 95 at the intersection of J. Turner Butler Boulevard and Belfort Road. It is located about 10 miles from Mayo Clinic and is the main admitting hospital for the clinic. The hospital has 289 private rooms. This short term skilled nursing facility participates with the Medicare program. An interfaith chapel is located on the hospital's first floor next to the main Information Desk.
St. Luke's has been a pioneer in patient care for more than 125 years, being Florida's first private hospital. It was in 1873 when the hospital was founded by three Jacksonville women. It began as a two-room cottage with four beds and a budget of less than $1,000. Due to a tragedy, St. Luke's moved in 1878 to Palmetto Street in downtown Jacksonville after its second building was burned by an arsonist in 1876. It grew quickly and after a while of this continuous growth it ended up moving to its fourth location, Boulevard and Eighth Street, just north of downtown in 1914. Finally, the hospital moved to its current location in the booming Southpoint area in 1984.
