Chinese Hospital, located in San Francisco, is a unique healthcare provider with a long and rich history of providing access to culturally competent health care services for the Chinese Community. Chinese Hospital is a 59 certified bed, acute care, community-owned, non-profit hospital that offers a wide range of medical, surgical and specialty programs. The hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) and participates in both programs Medicare and Medicaid. Responsive to the community's ethnic and cultural uniqueness and accessible to all socioeconomic levels, Chinese Hospital was conceived primarily to convey quality health care in a cost-effective way.
The history of Chinese Hospital starts in 1900 when the Tung Wah Dispensary opened in San Francisco's Chinatown. By 1923, Dispensary services had outgrown its space when fifteen community organizations created the Chinese Hospital Association, a new non-profit public benefit corporation. The Board of Trustees raised funds for the construction of a new facility at 835 Jackson Street, which was opened in October 1925. In the mid-1970s, health care services had already outgrown the new facility; therefore the Board of Trustees conducted an extensive fund raiser for the construction of a new facility to be placed at 845 Jackson Street.
The Chinese Hospital features a wide array of healthcare services and programs. The Emergency Room is supported by state-of-the-art equipment, is staffed 24 hours a day by Board Certified Emergency Medicine physicians and nurses trained in emergency treatment and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is fully equipped and staffed by experienced critical care nurses. The Medical Imaging/Radiology Services include computerized tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, ultrasound and other diagnostic services and the clinical laboratory is staffed with specially educated scientists. Other services that are available are same day surgery and endoscopic services, pharmacy and cardiopulmonary services among others.
