Cabrini Medical Center is a voluntary hospital, sponsored by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As a result of its demonstrated compliance with nationally recognized health care standards, Cabrini Medical Center has maintained accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO). It also has been approved by the New York City Department of Health, The New York State Department of Health, Accrediting Council for Graduate Medical Education, College of American Pathologists and Emergency Medical Services of the City of New York. Cabrini Medical Center counts with 478 certified beds and participates with programs like MEDICARE and MEDICAID. The Center, an integral part of the Church within the Archdiocese of New York, seeks to promote the teachings of the Gospel and of its foundress, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini.
In 1880 Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She was canonized as America's first Citizen Saint in 1946 and is known as the Patron Saint of Immigrants. In 1892, Columbus Hospital was founded in two small tenement houses in lower Manhattan but two years later it moved to its present location. In the early 1970s, Columbus Hospital merged with the Italian Hospital and changed its name to Cabrini Medical Center. In 1883, it started providing outpatient medical care to the immigrant community in its surrounding area. Today, Cabrini carries on the mission and traditions of Mother Cabrini by staying current to changing health care needs and providing a full spectrum of medical services in a caring and compassionate way.
