The Brooklyn Hospital Center

Nursing Jobs By State

The Brooklyn Hospital Center is a 653?bed teaching institution that is a major healthcare resource as well as a dynamic presence in what is New York City?s largest borough. The Hospital Center is the Brooklyn academic and clinical affiliate of Weill Medical College of Cornell University. The Hospital Center?s Downtown Campus is located just across the bridge from lower Manhattan. The Hospital Center is a 911-receiving hospital and a certified emergency cardiac-care facility. The Brooklyn Hospital Center is equipped with sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic modalities and the latest technology. Excellence in patient care and commitment to the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals are among the proud traditions of The Brooklyn Hospital Center.

In May, 1845, Brooklyn City Hospital (later renamed The Brooklyn Hospital) was incorporated by the state legislature and became the first voluntary hospital in what was then the City of Brooklyn. Fund raising began in order to be able to build a hospital that would answer according to the needs of the growing population. Already by 1848, there was enough money collected through private contributions to begin in earnest the search for land for a hospital which was found in an area bounded by Raymond Street, DeKalb Avenue and Canton Street. The hospital was also able to acquire a medical library that became one of the first public medical libraries in New York. In 1858, Pathological Hall was built and quickly recognized by the medical profession as a place where theorizing and conjecture were superseded by the study of facts. The hospital presented a continuous growth and expansion up to its present state (acquiring its official name in 1990) and signed an Academic and Clinical Affiliation Agreement with New York University Medical Center and New York University.

The Brooklyn Hospital Center has fully accredited, independent residency programs in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Family Practice, General Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and trains more than 250 physicians each year. The Hospital Center also provides training for residents in urology from the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center at Brooklyn. In addition, the Hospital Center offers opportunities for post-doctoral fellowship training in several subspecialty areas, including hematology-oncology, pulmonology and critical care, and gastroenterology.
