City of Hope

Nursing Jobs By State

City of Hope, located just northeast of Los Angeles in Duarte, California, is a most unique and remarkable place where compassion and leading-edge care go hand-in-hand. City of Hope is where, some of the world's most knowledgeable physicians, researchers, scientists and health care professionals join forces to treat cancers and other life-threatening diseases. These renowned experts provide modern patient care and also conduct leading-edge research. City of Hope is one of just a handful of Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). It is at City of Hope that more than 300 physicians and scientists and over 2,500 employees work to find the causes of and cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, including diabetes and HIV/AIDS. City of Hope has 158 licensed beds, 84 of which are devoted to bone marrow transplantation patients.

City of Hope was initially conceived as a haven for those stricken with tuberculosis. On September 28, 1912, 35 men and women met at the Music Hall in Los Angeles. A semblance of an organization was beginning and all members agreed on fund raising and establishing suitable quarters for the aid, cure and comfort of those who were stricken with tuberculosis. After the group became organized, a charter was granted in May 1913, officially establishing the Los Angeles Sanatorium under the auspices of the Jewish Consumptive Relief Association of Southern California. Following the purchase in December 1913 of 10 acres of land in Duarte, two old army tents were erected on the site the next year. The place started to continuously grow and develop. In a convention in 1946 it was decided to transform the institution from a tuberculosis sanatorium into a national medical center dedicated to the treatment and research of cancer and other devastating diseases progressing to the actual state of the facility.
