In 1888, the first buildings were built and the first indigent residents were transferred from the County hospital to the Poor Farm. In 1927, physical therapy started and two years later occupational therapy was included. Rancho was designated as a respiratory center for poliomyelitis patients in 1951, signaling the beginning of rehabilitation at Rancho and bringing new procedures and advances on the following years. In 1959, Rancho Los Amigos Hospital received its first accreditation the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. During the 1960?s Rancho Los Amigos Hospital added more services and in 1972, it became officially affiliated with the University of Southern California. Continual growth was made to answer the needs of the patients, always incorporating the most advanced technology in order to provide the best services.
