University Medical Center: A Long History

The Community Medical Center (CMC) has a long history of providing health care services to the people who live in the region of central California. Even though the CMC exists nowadays as an integrated systems of medical services, the roots of their history begins with the idea of Cecilia Burnett, who was a woman who gave the idea of creating a health care system. In the year 1897, Cecilia joined efforts with some physicians of Fresno and created a for-profit hospital which was focused on those men that came to the west looking for gold.

One of the facilities of this health care system is the University Medical Center (UMC). This is a medical center conformed by 274 bed teaching hospital that offers a big variety of outpatient and inpatient services. It is considered the main teaching hospital in the Central San Joaquin Valley and is also associated with the University of California, San Francisco and the Fresno Medical Education Program.

Some of the services provided by this medical center are: emergency services, surgery, weight loss surgery, cardiology, rehabilitation services and pharmacy among many others. The UMC is also the only Level 1 trauma center acclaimed burn unit in the Valley and is considered as one of the five hospitals that provide both trauma and burn services.
