In 1973, Wise Regional Health System was established by the city of Decatur as a Hospital Authority. This health system does not receive any tax revenues, all the activities are supported by hospital operations and donations from the public. When the hospital opened it had 50 beds, 2 operating rooms and an emergency room and 34,000 square feet but in 1995 and 1997, two separate extensions were built and the size of the hospital increased to approximately 80,000 square feet; back then it had 69 beds and a host of new and expanded services. In 2000, the East Campus of Wise Regional Health System was completed, adding a cardiac catheterization lab and imaging services, physician offices, a new therapy and rehabilitation facility and a new wellness facility.
In 2003, the third floor of the East Campus was finished; it turned out to be one of the most technologically advanced inpatient/outpatient surgical facilities in the state, it hosts spacious patient rooms and seven fully digitalized operating rooms. In 2004, Wise Regional Health System completed a highly advanced outpatient imaging center which contains equipment that exceeds the cost of the building. The hospital currently contains 85 beds and operates in 5 different buildings. The West Campus will be completed in 2006; it will include a variety of new services such as long-term rehabilitation, inpatient geriatric psychiatry and expanded dialysis. The services offered by this hospital are a Heritage Health Program, Mammography, General Hospital Services, a Fit-N-Wise Community Wellness and Fitness Center, Rehabilitation/Therapy Services, The Family Place Birthing Center, Women?s Services, Cardiology, Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery.
