The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is the primary health care provider of more than 112,000 veterans in southeast Texas. In fiscal year 2005, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center logged almost 750,000 outpatients including the satellite clinics in Texas City, Galveston, Lufkin and Beaumont. On that same period, 237 veterans were admitted to the Transitional Care Center and 11,854 veterans were admitted as inpatients. Every day, veterans from across the country are referred to the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center for treatment of spinal cord injury and diseases, medical treatment including nuclear medicine, ophthalmology, gastrointestinal endoscopy and cardiovascular surgery, radiation therapy and specialized diagnostic care.

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center houses one of the six Parkinson's Disease Research, Education and Clinical Centers, an award-winning Cardiac Surgery Program, a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Clinic and a Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center. In 2005, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center opened two new Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Galveston County.

DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) are Addictions, Allergy, Cardiology, Dentistry, Dermatology, Dialysis, Gastroenterology, Home Health Care, Infectious Diseases, Intensive Care, Neurology, Nuclear Medicine, Pain Management, Pharmacy, Respiratory Care, Rheumatology, Sleep Studies, Surgery-Cardiac, Surgery-General, Surgery-Plastic, Urology, Vascular Medicine, Vocational Rehabilitation-Adult and Telemetry. In 2004, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center was awarded with a Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing Services and in 2005 with the Robert W. Carey Organizational Excellence Award.
