Big Spring State Hospital is a 151 licensed-bed psychiatric facility accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations with 16 full-time physicians. Big Spring State Hospital opened its doors in 1939 as a result of a growing need of the communities of West Texas. The complex was composed of 8 buildings, including outpatient clinic, gymnasium, central kitchen, workshop, rehabilitation and volunteer buildings. The hospital has been a pioneer in many ways: it was the first to pilot an on-campus educational program, the first to have a public-awareness program, the first to develop aftercare programs for the mentally ill, and the first to have a volunteer program.
