In January 1898, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics opened its doors; however, the beginnings of patient service at The University of Iowa can be traced back to 1873 when the Medical Department opened a hospital that was operated jointly with the Sisters of Mercy. This University Hospital as it was back then would seem modest today, but at that time, it represented the beginning of a new era of medical education and patient service in Iowa. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is recognized as one of the best hospitals in the United States and as the only comprehensive, tertiary-level center of Iowa. This Hospitals and Clinics are academic medical centers committed to providing world-class health care to every patient; therefore, they are patient-focused.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has 760 plus beds, more than 1,300 professional nurses, 191 fellow physicians, 470 resident physicians and dentists, 750 staff physicians and dentists and 4,000 other professionals and support staff. The high quality health care that University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics provides has the support of the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine under a partnership called UI Health Care. This partnership provides training for the next generation of health care professionals, cutting edge medical research and the best possible patient-care health care.

The UI Health Care also includes support to the clinical services of the following departments: Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Hospital Dentistry, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Surgery and Urology.
