In January 1898, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics opened its doors; however, the beginnings of patient service at The University of Iowa can be traced back to 1873 when the Medical Department opened a hospital that was operated jointly with the Sisters of Mercy. This University Hospital as it was back then would seem modest today, but at that time, it represented the beginning of a new era of medical education and patient service in Iowa. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is recognized as one of the best hospitals in the United States and as the only comprehensive, tertiary-level center of Iowa. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has 760 plus beds, more than 1,300 professional nurses, 191 fellow physicians, 470 resident physicians and dentists, 750 staff physicians and dentists and 4,000 other professionals and support staff. Carver College of Medicine under a partnership called UI Health Care.
