Hartford Hospital is an acute care hospital, located in the south end of Hartford Connecticut. After the explosion of a steam boiler at the Fales and Gray manufacturing company in 1854 (at that time there was no general hospital in Harford), the need for a medical care facility became evident. The physicians of the Hartford Medical Society urged for the creation of a general hospital for Hartford and for raising the necessary funds from private donations. Built thanks to the humanitarian concern for all of the citizens of Hartford, the hospital was founded in 1854 and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2004. In 1994, The Institute of Living, a psychiatric hospital founded in 1822, became the Mental Health Division of Hartford Hospital.
Hartford Hospital is a major tertiary care and community health care center, serving a statewide patient population, providing a wide variety of services. Some of its Clinical programs and services are: the bariatric surgery program dedicated on providing technologically advanced, compassionate, and safe surgical treatment for morbid obesity. The Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery that offers alternatives to blood transfusions in order to respect the patient?s rights to autonomy and self determination. The Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS), an Internet-based system of integrated services, provides timely and easily accessible resources when most needed.
