Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) was created and founded in 1986 when the Sisters of Mercy Auburn Regional Community and the Sisters of Mercy Burlingame Regional Community fused their health care organizations into just one. The Sisters decided to make this union to increase their charitable services, also to uphold the social justice and also to enlarge the Catholic health care services. This year they are celebrating the 20th anniversary of this fusion.

Since the same year of the foundation of CHW and their healthcare organizations other congregations and also non Catholic community hospitals have joined the CHW. Also this foundation is today supported by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Adrian, MI, the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Redwood City, CA, the Dominican Sisters of Kenosha, WI and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in Houston, TX.

Several hospitals that have joined the foundation CHW have been providing their services for more than 100 years. In fact, the Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, CA is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The foundation is headquartered in San Francisco, CA and today is formed by 40 medical centers and hospitals in California, Nevada and Arizona. CHW is also the eighth biggest hospital system in the country and the largest non for profit hospital supplier in California.
