Willing to Become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in New York?

Nursing Jobs By State

If you have made up your mind to become a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of New York, there are some requisites you should meet as well as other regulations you have to follow.  Firstly, it is required that you have a good moral character and be seventeen years old as a minimum besides being a high-school graduate (its equivalent is also fine) and, as said before, meet the examination and education requirements.  Moreover, a fee must be paid and submitted in conjunction with an application for licensure and other corresponding forms. The licensure fee is $135 and, for this matter, you are not allowed to send cash.

For Licensed Practical Nursing in particular, you must satisfy two main requirements, which are the completion of high-school and of any of the four following alternatives.  The first one is for those people who have taken a 9-month program in practical nursing that the New York State Education Department has already registered or that the corresponding authority has recognized as preparatory for practice as an LPN.

The second alternative is for those people who have taken any 9-or-more-month program of study conducted by U.S. armed forces and approved by the New York State Education Department.  Another option is addressed to graduates from a general professional nursing approved program.  The last option is exclusive for those people who have completed 4 quarters of a professional nursing approved program in the U.S at the level of baccalaureate, diploma or associate.  Also, these students must have completed courses of nursing including a clinical component in every semester with 20 semester hour credits or more in the classroom and clinical portions.

Furthermore, you should also complete a training or coursework in infection control and barrier precautions.  This must suit the professional?s practice and include work practice controls and engineering for preventing the HIV and the HBV viruses.  Applicants who graduated from registered nursing programs before September 1, 1993 should present an attestation of compliance of the requirements, or the exemption of them if it is the case.
