Inova Alexandria Hospital was established in 1872 by Julia Johns and other members. They first formed the Alexandria Infirmary Association, but in the 1880s, the hospital opened the surgery department, a Nurses Training school and a dispensary.
In 1961, Alexandria Hospital began a program of emergency medicine with a department open 24 hours a day with full time medical doctors. It is the first approach to emergency care. Then the hospital moved to Seminary Road with the contributions of land and finance from private individuals.
In 1997, Alexandria Hospital united to Inova Health System, which was the leading non profit health care service provider. These Inova Health Systems include Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.
Inova Alexandria Hospital has 339 bed hospital and offers services in cancer center, cardiac and pulmonary, diabetes, diagnostic services, eICU®, emergency department, Endoscopy, heart center, radiology, labor and delivery, mental and behavioral, nutrition services, orthopedics services, pain management, pediatrics, rehabilitation, sleep disorders, stroke, surgical services, vascular services, women's center, age-related macular degeneration, health screenings, HIV or aids services, life with cancer®, long term care services, bariatric surgery, outpatient surgery, northern Virginia sickle cell center, Inova employee assistance, physical therapy, clinical research trials and Inova wound healing center.

Some of the most important initiatives include a Community Access Program, which coordinates health service for more than 45,000 insured residents; Congregational Health Partnership (CHP) that helps communities to organize its health minister and to promote health and other preventions activities; Cultural Competence, which improves the ability to provide a capable and well-rounded health care, such as providing programs, classes, service and educational material to the Fight the Flu campaign; Operation Stroke develops a program to educate people about stroke and many more.
