American College of Nurse Practitioners Announces 2005 Board Election Results

Washington DC (PRWEB) January 15, 2005 -- The American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) is pleased to announce the election of five new members to its 2005-2006 Board of Directors. The board members will begin their terms following the 2005 ACNP National Nurse Practitioner Summit in Washington, DC, February 4-7, 2005.

President-Elect

Kenneth P. Miller, PhD, RN, CFNP, FAAN - Ken Miller is a Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Clinical Scholarship at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center, College of Nursing (CON), and has been a nurse educator/researcher for 20 years. Dr. Miller is the current President of the New Mexico Nurse Practitioner Council and practices as a FNP at a nurse managed clinic in Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of Arizona, College of Nursing, Dr. Miller also has a doctorate in Clinical Nursing Research and a post master?s certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He previously served on the ACNP Board of Directors as Treasurer. He is the current Treasurer, Executive Committee Member, Board Member and Chair of the audit/finance committee for the National Nursing Centers Consortium.

Secretary

Teresa Richardson, MSN, APRN, BC - Teresa Richardson is a psychiatric nurse practitioner providing primary mental health care for individuals, families and couples experiencing behavioral and emotional problems at the Center for Families in Transition in Bethesda, Maryland. Ms. Richardson received her MSN from Southern Connecticut State University and was educated as a Behavioral Science Nurse Practitioner at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. From 2002-2003, she served as adjunct faculty at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, teaching mental health studies. She is past acting Executive Director for the District of Columbia Board of Nursing. She is currently serving as a member of the Committee on Impaired Nurses for the District of Columbia.

Individual Member Representative

Patricia A. Hughes, MS, RN, FNP, WHNP, B.C. - Patricia Hughes is a nurse practitioner in Internal Medicine at Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Pleasanton, California where she provides expert adult primary care to a diverse population 17 years and older, including Spanish speaking patients. As part of a team of MDs, nurse practitioners, psychologists and pharmacists, Ms. Hughes helps coordinate interdisciplinary care for patients. She received her MSN from the University of California, San Francisco. She is active in the California Association for Nurse Practitioners, serving on the Board of Directors for four years with a primary interest in Government Relations. She has been active in coordinating local educational programs to qualify California NPs for the privilege of prescribing Schedule 2 drugs. Ms. Hughes also coordinated the statewide government relations Grassroots program for 5 years, and served as president of CANP?s Region 8 (Alameda/Contra Costa counties).

National Affiliate Representative

Julie A. Stanik-Hutt, PhD, ACNP, CCNS - During the course of her 30 year career, Julie Stanik-Hutt has held a variety of staff and advanced practice positions in critical care nursing, and for the last 8 years has practiced as an Acute Care NP. In 2003 she joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and maintains an inpatient cardiology practice at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She earned her MSN from the University of California, San Francisco and completed her NP preparation at Georgetown University. Dr. Stanik-Hutt is a member of the Acute Care NP Content Expert Panel for ANCC, the NP Peer Review and Advisory Committee for the Maryland Board of Nursing, and has represented the Nurse Practitioners Association of Maryland (NPAM) on the Maryland Nurses Association Legislative Committee. For the last 2½ years she has served as the Legislative Chairperson for NPAM and provided leadership to several advanced practice issue campaigns. Dr. Stanik-Hutt also represented advanced practice nursing interests as an invited panelist to the Maryland General Assembly's Health Care Summit in 2003.

State Affiliate Representative

Michelle Ashby, MSN, CRNP, ACNP - Michelle Ashby is an inpatient cardiology nurse practitioner working with a private practice cardiology group in a community hospital setting. In addition to her full-time clinical position, she also has supervisory responsibility for the practice?s 17 nurse practitioners. Ms. Ashby earned her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania in the Adult Critical Care Nurse Practitioner specialty. She has been active in many professional organizations throughout her career: she currently serves as Secretary for the Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners; was a founding member and Treasurer of the Lancaster Area Advanced Practice Providers (at present serving as their Co-Chair and Secretary); is a member of the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association where she has served several terms as a Director for District 16; and has served three times on the Commission/Cabinet on Nursing Practice at the state level. She is a current member of the ACNP National Clinical Conference program planning committee.
